A medical receptionist is responsible for greeting patients at a healthcare facility, managing appointment scheduling, answering phone calls, verifying insurance information, collecting patient payments, maintaining patient records, and performing administrative tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the front office, all while upholding patient confidentiality.
Key responsibilities:
- Patient check-in and check-out: Greeting patients, verifying their identity, updating medical records, collecting co-pays, and scheduling follow-up appointments.
- Appointment scheduling: Managing patient appointments, confirming appointments via phone calls or text messages, and rescheduling as needed.
- Phone management: Answering incoming calls, directing calls to appropriate staff members, taking messages, and scheduling appointments over the phone.
- Insurance verification: Checking patient insurance eligibility and verifying benefits.
- Patient registration: Collecting and updating patient demographic information, including contact details and medical history.
- Medical records management: Maintaining patient files, scanning documents, and ensuring accurate record keeping.
- Billing and payments: Processing patient payments, handling credit card transactions, and balancing daily receipts.
- Administrative tasks: Maintaining front desk organization, managing appointment reminder systems, and completing administrative paperwork.
- Patient assistance: Answering basic medical questions, providing directions to the facility, and assisting patients with completing necessary forms.
Required skills for a medical receptionist:
- Excellent communication skills:Ability to interact professionally and clearly with patients, staff, and insurance companies.
