A material handler, also known as a warehouse associate or package handler, is responsible for moving, storing, and handling materials in a warehouse or production facility:
- Receiving and unloading: Unload freight by hand or with equipment like forklifts and pallet jacks. Check for damaged goods and verify the quantity and quality of the order.
- Inventory: Maintain inventory records by adding or removing supplies as they are received or shipped. Participate in physical inventories of the warehouse or supply yard.
- Delivering and retrieving: Deliver and retrieve supplies to and from storage areas or work.
- Stocking and rotating: Stock shelves and rotate inventory.
- Cleaning: Keep loading and docking areas clear and clean machinery.
- Safety: Wear safety gear, such as gloves and goggles, when handling tools like box cutters.
- Record-keeping: Record inventory statuses and make sure deliveries match purchase orders.
- Waste disposal: Coordinate the disposal of surplus property.
- Customer service: Answer phones and provide information to customers.
- Damage claims: Prepare damage claims for a supervisor to review and sign
